Success And Survival Tips From Alaska – Do Not Surprise The Teddy Bears

Survival expert Bear Grylls has recently starred in an incredible series of TV survival shows that are full of survival and success tips. He introduced this episode as follows:

“I’m Bear Grylls. I’ve survived some of the world’s harshest environments. Now I’m in Alaska, one of the world’s last great wildernesses, and one mistake here can be fatal. My mission: to show you the skills you need to survive here.”

Alaska’s landscape is made up of endless coastlines, deep forests and huge glaciers. Seventeen of the highest mountains in the United States are in Alaska.

Mountaineers, skiers and hikers visit every year to enjoy the wilderness, but with the excitement comes danger. More than 20 people die each year.

The bear was placed by helicopter on top of a mountain in the role of a lost skier. He only had a knife, a water bottle, skis, a flint, an intrepid camera crew and a woolen hat! He would have to find his own way back to safety.

He described what happened next:

“I’m 9000 feet up and there’s nothing but snow and rock for miles and miles. My best chance of survival is to get down.

“The biggest threat to skiers is avalanches. They kill about forty people every year in North America. One wrong turn and the entire mountainside could fall on you. You need to know how to avoid them.

“The key with avalanches is to read the snow and you can use the ski pole in front of you just to test the snow to see if it’s compacted or if it’s layered.

“What you want is when you push it, it’s nice and consistent, but if you push it down and it suddenly drops a little bit, that’s a sign that it’s layered and that’s the dangerous thing.

“Avalanches are often triggered by inexperienced skiers and snowboarders who come to enjoy the forty feet of virgin snow that can often fall here.”

In early 2006, an Anchorage snowboarder triggered a 200-foot-wide avalanche on a slope just like Bear was on. His body was finally recovered three months later. He had fallen 1600 feet.

“Where there is a risk of avalanche always carry a beacon. They transmit a signal that a rescue service can follow.

“Now I’m down at least 5000 feet and I’m finally leaving the high snow faces behind. There’s so much rock it’s becoming impossible to ski anymore. All these skis are going to do is slow me down. I’m better off without them.”

Oso threw away the skis but one of the sticks remained.

“Below me is a glacier, literally a river of ice, and like a river this glacier flows downhill. If I can reach it, it should take me out of the mountains.

“To get to the glacier I have to follow this ridge and it’s not easy and the temperature is dropping fast. Temperatures here in Alaska can reach minus 60 degrees and frost is always a danger in the mountains.”

“The points to watch out for are your extremities: your hands, your feet and your face. The signs that you’re suffering from frostbite are your skin going from this waxy red color and finally black. Frostbite is something really horrible and painful.

“This ridge took me to a north-facing slope. This gets less sunlight so it’s still covered in snow. The weather doesn’t look so good. Being caught in bad weather can be fatal.

“I need to get down fast, but the slope below me is almost 300 feet. I’m going to use a technique called a ‘glissade’.”

To perform the glissade, you dig into your ice ax to control the speed of your descent. If you don’t dig the ax hard enough, you’ll go too fast. If you dig it too deep, it can rip it out of your hand.

Bear used half a ski pole as he had no ax and descended at about 50 kilometers per hour desperately clinging to the pole. Your account continued:

“I came to a glacier. There are over 100,000 of them in Alaska. They form the largest reservoir of fresh water on earth, but they are full of crevasses that are often covered by layers of snow. You have to tie a partner to cross. with safety

“My luck is within. There is solid ground running along the side of the glacier. But at the bottom of the glacier is a forty-meter waterfall.

“There’s an ice tunnel in the glacier that could take me out. Make sure the ice is solid before you go in. There could be over 200 feet of ice above me and I could fall at any moment. Just go through that tunnel. last resource. The further you go the harder it is to come back.”

I don’t know what the camera crew had to say about this little adventure!

Then Bear saw daylight ahead. It showed its output:

“I’ve never been so relieved. At last, I’m off the glacier!”

He took off his ski boots but kept his inner slippers on. He drank some water that looked dirty but the brown color was glacial silt or pulverized rock. Bear commented, “This water should be good to drink.”

He continued to move down, “Now I’m off the mountain, I have to keep going down to find food and shelter.”

He was bombarded by seagulls protecting their eggs which are full of protein, vitamins and minerals, but he had no luck and only found stones that looked like eggs. However, he was far from discouraged:

“The landscape is starting to open up and I can see the tree line ahead and I’m almost in the forest. I can see a thick forest and a deep gorge and there might be a river in the background. Most villages in Alaska are along rivers” .

Now he was in bear country.

Grizzly bears can grow up to nine feet tall, weigh up to 1100 pounds, and can tear a man apart. When rangers found the remains of a hiker, who had recently died, there were two empty shells on the ground but the bullets had not been enough to stop the bear.

Large groups are rarely attacked because they make a lot of noise. Hunters are more likely to be attacked because they sneak around on their own.

Bears are most dangerous when startled, so make a lot of noise yelling things. Bear started yelling, “BEAR! BEAR!”

But he felt uncomfortable no matter how much noise he made!

He found some berry seeds in bear shit. The good news: There are edible berries around. The bad news: there are bears around!

I was once chased by a mountain bear cub in Tehran. I ran much faster than usual (I was eight at the time) and escaped. I wouldn’t want to run with a full grown bear.

Bear went down a huge 200-foot waterfall: “Let your legs take the pressure. They’re a lot stronger than your arms.”

It is essential to take your time in such situations – you can only make a mistake.

He later found an Eskimo potato full of starch and carbohydrates and said to be Alaska’s most valuable food source.

He built a bed of branches to keep his body above the cold ground and then found some alder saplings to build a half-domed shelter. To waterproof, layers of fir are added from the bottom up.

He lit a fire that would put out the bears. In this part of Alaska, black bears are more dangerous than grizzlies.

Grizzlies are territorial, so if you meet them, be submissive and back off. However, if you meet a black bear, it will probably be after you. They kill fewer humans than Grizzlies but, in 90% of their attacks, they stalk humans.

If you are cornered by a black bear you will have to fight for your life. Most of the villagers carry a gun, but if you’re unarmed, grab a stick and poke the bear in the eyes.

At night, Bear heard something moving. It could be a moose or a bear:

“I hope whatever it is will leave this ‘bear’ alone!”

He woke up at 5 a.m. exhausted on his second day in Alaska:

“I’m a little cheeky, but that’s okay. When you’ve been wet all night, it’s okay for me to complain a little.”

It followed a creek to a river and then down to the seashore where most people would be. But I could still travel 500 miles in each direction and find no one:

“My best chance of rescue is to be spotted by one of the many small fishing boats that ply this area.”

He saw some bald eagles following the salmon. The river is full of king and pink salmon. Oso had no fishing line but, undeterred, he made a fishing spear. Always look for an alternative instead of giving up.

Bear spooked the salmon in about six inches of water by yelling and striking the water with his spear. Finally, he threw in a large salmon and immediately got into it:

“They’re full of protein and the scales can be eaten as small as they are. I’ve always loved sushi!

“It may be out of the woods, but I’m still surrounded by bears that come down here to fish.”

Now he sought refuge. Caves are ready-made shelters, but they are often occupied by wildlife, including bears. He found a shallow cave with high walls where nothing could sneak up on him from behind.

Then he found mussels. Seafood fish should always be properly cooked first. He surrounded the mussels with two layers of seaweed that would steam them in ten minutes. I’m surprised Bear did it

do not suggest eating the algae as well:

“When you pick the mussels, touch them. If they don’t close they’re already dead, so leave them.”

He created a fire signal with white smoke to contrast with the dark trees behind him but he didn’t see any ships so he had to keep going.

Suddenly Bear saw some wooden buildings but they were deserted. Alaska has a history of boom and bust.

Saw some glaciers which are usually tourist spots. I would have a better chance of contacting other humans there, but it would be a long way.

Bear decided to use an old boat he found near the buildings. He used a shovel as an oar. One of the key lessons of survival is to be open to all opportunities. It’s the same with success.

An old ship in an ice-filled sea is a risk but it was his best option. He moved slowly up the coast. As he continued, he encountered a bay full of sea ice. As he entered the bay, the ice thickened and there were blocks of ice around him.

It moved between small icebergs. These can capsize suddenly when the water melts the ice underneath. Freezing water was beginning to seep into the boat. She quickly packed her heaviest clothes into her backpack to avoid the weight.

His ship sank and he was in freezing water. The danger was that he might suck in a great gulp of water and air, but he reached dry land.

Once on the shore, he removed the rest of his clothes quickly. You survive longer naked than in wet clothes. He did push-ups to get the blood flowing.

His jacket had been left dry in his backpack. This would help. He stayed for a while and then continued, but:

“Just when I lost hope, I hear the distant sound of an engine.”

He waved his arms and backpack in the air:

“They saw me! I’m on my way home! Alaska is a place where you can really get close to nature and that to me is the real magic of it.”

What lessons of success can be learned?

You need to know how to avoid life’s catastrophes, be it avalanches, personal relationships, finances, health or life itself. Learn the skills and knowledge you need or hire an expert.

don’t stay Moving quickly on any project will keep your enthusiasm alive. It will keep you warm enough to survive a mountain descent.

Say goodbye to anything that slows you down, whether it’s heavy or heavy ski boots or bad habits.

Don’t wait for a light at the end of the tunnel, stride down and turn the ***** thing on yourself! (Quote from Sara Henderson)

Go slow and take your time when facing dangerous obstacles where every step matters – sign contracts carefully.

It’s okay to feel down sometimes. If you spend the night soaking wet, you might feel “loved” but at least you’ll be grateful to be able to sleep most nights in a warm, dry bed.

Take advantage of any opportunity that comes your way.

Learn which foods and drinks are most valuable.

If you go down to the woods today, don’t surprise the teddy bears or you’ll become their picnic!
